Sandra Horst is chorus master at both Canadian Opera Company and Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. WILLIAM R. BRAUN finds out what kind of basic training makes her two very different ensembles tick.

Operagoers who give any thought to the matter can doubtless imagine many of the elements that go into the participation of the chorus. Obviously, there's the pronunciation of the text,
the learning of notes, the clarity of attacks and releases. But few in the audience could guess what Sandra Horst — chorus master of both Opera Theatre of Saint Louis and Canadian Opera Company in Toronto — does to her singers as the final step before she turns them over to the stage director and the conductor: she tries to throw them off.
