Mad About the Girl
When the new Metropolitan Opera season opens this month, Natalie Dessay will become the fifty-eighth Lucia di Lammermoor in the company's history. Her predecessors here include most of the world's great Lucias since 1883, artists as diverse as Marcella Sembrich, Nellie Melba, Adelina Patti, Amelita Galli-Curci, Lily Pons, Renata Scotto, Beverly Sills, June Anderson — not to mention the epoch-making Maria Callas and Joan Sutherland. Even Callas's teacher, Elvira de Hidalgo, brought her own Lucia to the Met — exactly once — in 1925. The role could well reposition Dessay in the company's constellation, since she has not previously ventured here into bel canto or even sung any operas in Italian.
